For you, the person who puts up walls too tall for anyone to climb.
For me, someone who has become far too used to pushing people away.
And for 2017, a year to be different, more caring, more kind, and to let love in.
In 2016, I constantly wanted to hide from the world. From the pain, from the hurtful events, and from all the loss. Just when I felt like I was starting to stand up again, something would push me back down to my knees.
In 2016, it was easy to fall into the trap and cyclical thinking of “It’ll never get any better.” It was easy to try and give up on hope, as we were constantly being bombarded with awful things going on in the world around us. It was easy to get distracted by anger and hate. It became easy to blame a year, just a number, for being awful.
But here’s a secret: 2016 didn’t do anything wrong. It’s just a number.
Which means 2017 is also, just a number. We can make it anything we want.
I don’t pretend like I know the future. I don’t know what the next year will bring, but I do know that I’m going to interact with the world in a different way, and I hope you will too.
Because in the end, we just need to be nice. Kind. Caring.
I’m not promising a miracle year. But we can make it better. It’s a new year, so it can be a new beginning, even though it’s just another day.
I hope this year, you let people in.
I hope you give people a chance to know YOU. Who you are, what makes you tick, where your passions lie. Everything and anything that makes up you. You are so uniquely intricate, and important. Let people get to know that.
I hope you realize your worth. And I hope you make it important to you. No more self deprecating comments, no more lack of self-care. You are important, so stop treating yourself like you aren’t.
In 2016, many of us learned how to hide our flaws an imperfections out of fear. I hope in 2017, you find power in those differences and use them to your advantage.
I hope you let someone love you. Every single part of you. (Yes, that includes your flaws.) In 2017, you deserve all the happiness, and all of the love. I hope you know that.
Go out, find it, and don’t hold yourself back.
