Blogging isn’t easy. That’s what I wished someone told me when I first started Honestly Haley a year and a half ago.
It takes a ton of time, dedication, creativity, patience, and persistence to get anywhere, and most importantly, you can’t be too hard on yourself. (Guilty.)
There are a ton of help articles out there, ranging from helpful tips to confusing vocabulary (like-VPS HOSTING-WHA?) but few actually tell you what you need to be successful! How weird is that?
I thought it would be helpful to give you guys 5 things successful bloggers need. Now, I’m in no way an expert. I’m still learning. HOWEVER, I have learned quite a bit in my small amount of time in the blogosphere, and here’s what I think you need to be successful.
So, if you are thinking about starting a blog, or you have one and just aren’t reaching your goals yet, continue reading to make sure you are setting yourself up for success.
Things Successful Bloggers Need:
Like I mentioned above, dedication is key. You need to post frequently-I post at least once a week, and I’d say that’s a good number to aim for. If you don’t have time to write each week-find a day a month to type out your four posts. ALSO-you need to dedicate yourself to doing some research. Who is your target audience? Who is your audience right now? (More often then not, you’ll find these two are different answers.)
This will help you keep on track, and get you where you want to go without so many pit stops.
2. A GOOD WEBSITE TEMPLATE
Bad design will send away your viewers in a heartbeat. Bad functionality is even worse.
Now, I’m not saying you need to hire a designer, although often you can find one on Fiverr for a decent price. You don’t need to pay $500 for a template to have a decent website. A good template will cost you between $30-130 on average. Read reviews before you buy! The last thing you want to do is shell out a hundred dollars for a template that has technical issues.
3. Setup Google Analytics.
This can be confusing. If you have a webmaster, they can do it for you, but if you are like me and have that hat on as well, use a plugin. If you really want to, Google can help you set it up as well.
Google analytics is essential to track your growth-and if you want to join networks and sponsorship groups, they typically require your google stats. The sooner you set this up the better! I love going back to my first month stats and comparing them to my stats now. Seeing your growth is key!
I can’t speak enough for this form of social media. It drives 80% of my traffic. I use Facebook and Instagram too, but Pinterest is by far the best to getting people to my site.
Pin your posts, join group boards, and try to pin often to build your following. This is how you find your audience!
5. An organization system.
Nothing will ever get accomplished if you solely function off sticky notes, written on napkins, and scribbled receipts. I use my paper planner, but I’ve just recently switched to using Trello. I put my post ideas in a column, and then schedule them out for when I want them due. It’s so nice to have everything in one place.
Obviously, this is just a starter list. There are many things successful bloggers need, but these are the ones to start with. Your blog will take time. Stick around-your subscriber and viewers will come.
Best of luck-and reach out if you want to talk about blogging further!
