My week has been absolutely ridiculous and although I get to go on break in 4 days, I have to make it until then with my busy schedule without forgetting a project, paper, or upcoming test.
It seems as though many of my fellow college students are in the same boat. Professors are realizing that they haven’t covered things and are cramming them in the last couple weeks. Besides that, all of the final projects are getting assigned which immediately raise my stress level. Plus, if you have a job, you’re toast.
Wait, no you’re not.
I’ve had four papers due in the last week, I worked 25 hours in the last 72 alone, and I’ve still managed to have fun with my friends and binge watch the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix. How?
I do a lot of things to keep my stress level at a manageable amount, although this past week has been especially hard. If you have a busy week coming up, feel free to try out some of my techniques to make it until the weekend :)
1. Write everything down.
Everything. Big or little. No exception. If you are so busy that your sleep schedule is lacking, there is a very good chance you might completely forget a due date or an appointment. You can’t rely on your memory. While it might be trustworthy, these are crazy circumstances and it can’t keep everything straight!
Now, take that list from #1 and start planning out what you are going to do each day. If you start sectioning things off, they won’t seem so overwhelming. Use a planner, calendar, notebook, anything to get a schedule set. Make sure you even schedule fun things for you to do like catching up on a TV episode that you missed.
3. Follow your plan.
As best as you can. If something takes longer than expected that’s okay, but if Netflix isn’t on the plan for Monday, don’t do it.
4. Say no. You’re busy.
Sometimes. There is a fine line between being a hermit and being studious. “Want to have a movie night tonight?” No. “Want to get dinner with me at the dining hall?” Yes. Organize friend time around study dates and eating, not hanging out, just until you get your work load back under control.
5. Sleep, eat, and take breaks.
Don’t sacrifice sleep one night-you’ll be less productive the next day. You’ll have the tendency to try and skip meals to get work done, don’t do it. Food is essential to keep your brain working. So are little breaks. Check Facebook for 5 minutes, that’s a good break. 5 episodes of the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, too long of a break. You’ve got stuff to do!
6. Do something to help you relieve stress.
We all have something that helps us do this. I take photos or blog. My friend Hannah does yoga and drinks tea. Do whatever helps you. Being stressed will not help you be more productive.
7. This will all be over soon.
Remind yourself that this isn’t permanent. Your schedule will go back to normal soon. Just breathe and hang in there.
