I’m 20 years old and I have a stuffed animal with me at college. Not just any stuffed animal, a Pooh Bear that I’ve had since I was born.
Weird enough, I thought about not bringing a stuffed animal along to college with me. Why? I was afraid of what people would think.
I was still stuck in my high school mindset, where I cared far too much about other people’s opinions of me, and not enough about what I thought of myself.
So there I was, sitting in my room in the final days before move in. My life was packed up around me, and Pooh Bear was still on my bed. Fast forward three days-the car is packed, my room is empty, and in a last minute moment of panic, I run upstairs to grab Pooh Bear off of my bed.
When I got to college-what did I do? I put him in a drawer and hid him from the world for around a month.
After a month of getting to know my roommate, one day I was looking for a box of tissues, and I opened the drawer with Pooh Bear in it. I don’t know if it was because I was sick, because I wasn’t full adjusted to school yet, or just because I didn’t care anymore, but I pulled him out, and he stayed at the end of my bed for the rest of the year.
And you know what? My roommate did the same. It ended up that she had a blanket from when she was younger that she hid in a bin until we turned the lights off every night. After making more friends, we figured out that the majority of us had brought a stuffed animal or blanket to school. While we all didn’t sleep with them nearby, we had them there.
My stuffed animal has been through everything with me. Getting my ears pierced, 3 surgeries, drama at school, everything. So why would I leave it at home during the biggest change in my life so far?
Stuffed animals and security blankets are just a piece of home. They are a piece of the familiar. Just having yours with you at school makes a drab dorm room feel like home.
So what’s stopping you? I can honestly say, no one at school cares if you have one with you. And if they do, do you really want to be their friend?
Sure, after college they might get tucked away in a box and forgotten about for 10 years, but right now, Zipperhead, Duke, Pooh Bear, and Bunny are getting all of us through exams, papers, and tests by reminding us of a time when being imaginative and carefree was easy.
I say bring them. It’s one last adventure before we have to grow up and be an adult without training wheels.
What’s the name of your stuffed animal or blanket from your childhood? Did you bring it to college with you? Why or why not?
