I don’t know about you guys, but this warm weather has put Chicago in a crazy mood. I mean, we just hit 70 degrees today and people were out in shorts, running around, skateboarding, and even studying outside on campus. It’s amazing.
However, with the warm weather comes the need to clean. Now, I don’t have a house to spring clean or repaint, but I always seem to have the desire to de-clutter my life when springtime rolls around. Do you?
So I thought, how can I spring clean my life? What can I do to de-clutter and destress before summer rolls around? This is what I came up with.
Here’s what you can do, and what I’m planning on doing, to spring clean my life before summer.
1. Clean out your inbox.
I know, we don’t like to do it. Once your inbox gets above 40 new messages, it seems easier to just ignore it and let it go. Don’t do it. Just set aside some time and go through to delete things you don’t need anymore. If you need some help, go visit Unroll.me, it’s a website that pulls all the emails you are subscribed to so you can unsubscribe in one place. Genius, right? Most importantly, once you get your inbox back on track, don’t fall back into bad habits.
2. Go through your closet.
I’m a huge culprit on this one. My rule: if you haven’t worn it in over a year, get rid of it. There’s clearly something stopping you from wearing it, whether it doesn’t fit you right or your style has changed, so free up space for clothes you do wear. Either resell your clothes to a secondhand shop or donate them.
3. Get the gross jobs done first.
I hate cleaning the bathroom. Hate. It. But it needs to happen. I’d rather do the worst thing first and get it over with than have it hang over my head while I try to get other things done. Just get it out of the way so you can focus better on your other tasks.
4. Clear your brain.
This is much needed, especially on days like today. Go out and spend time with your thoughts. Go for a run, do yoga, stare at the sky, jam to your favorite artist, or even read a book. Just go spend some time with yourself. We all need alone time sometimes.
5. Remove toxic people from your life.
Yes. I said it. It might stink-but you know that friend who’s been stand offish for months now and even when you reach out, you just seem to get shut down or disappointed? Maybe just stop reaching out for a while. If there are far more negatives coming out of a relationship than positives, maybe you guys just need a break for a while. I’m not saying to do anything mean, but maybe just let things settle for a while and see if you can pick up the pieces at a later point.
6. Clean your car.
Please. I’m so bad at this. Vacuum it out, wash the carpets, remove the wrappers from your lunch two months ago. Just clean it top to bottom. Go buy a nice air freshener. Tah-dah. It’s amazing what a clean, good smelling car can do to your mood.
7. Take a look at your budget.
Don’t have one? Make one. Just keep an eye on where your money is going each month and how much you can afford to spend on things. It’ll help in the long run. That way you can see if you are using your money wisely or if it should be used towards something else.
8. Clear out your little junk spaces.
Mine is behind my dresser at school. Anything that I’m not sure where it should go just kind of magically ends up there. We all have that spot. Go to it and actually sort through everything so you start with a clean junk space-more space for you to put more stuff, right?
So that’s what I have to help you guys spring clean your life this spring. What else are you doing to prepare for summer?
